REACTING TO PORTUGAL'S ENTRY
On the same night as the fan favorites KEiiNO and Hatari from Norway and Iceland, respectively, where chosen, Portugal also chose the also fan favorite Conan Osíris, through Festival da Canção 2019, to go to Tel Aviv with the song "Telemóveis". It's our home country's act for Eurovision, but we will be transparent about that no matter what! Here's the review!
Hope you enjoy it!

I always dreamed that my country would take something more alternative to the contest, instead of a ballad every year. I thought this would take years to come true, but the Conan Osíris came into the picture, and gifted us with such a brilliant entry like this. Indefinable is the word that defines Conan's music style. There's so much influences to this song that you can't just define what he does! He even brought Fado influences to the song which is something that wasn't really appreciated in Eurovision when Portugal send it, but this time, it does work quite nicely! The song's unpredictability plays a huge role in gripping the viewer to the performance which elevates the song to a whole new different level, and João Reis Moreira plays an important role in highlighting the artistic part of the performance, along with elements as the stairs, the arrow, the mask, their outfits, in the end everything comes together, because of the way it manages to get your attention and think what you just saw. I must say, the lyrics of the song, even though a lot of people won't get the meaning, are really deep, and it does great things for me, because I like to interpret this kind of hidden messages. Of course, a lot of people won't like this, it's a very polarizing song, but sometimes, these type of songs are those ones who can get all the way to the top, or all the way to the bottom if everything fails to deliver, so it's very hard to predict where this will finish, but I am confident in a Top 10-5 finish, and I'm giving it a 9,5 out of 10! Good job Portugal!

Before I start, I just want to say: NO! The song is not about cellphones! The lyrics have their own meaning implied, which is up to everyone to interpret the way they think. About "Telemóveis", either you love it or you hate it, and I wouldn't recommend this to somenone who prefers a more conventional style. The mix between Fado and electronic, and even other melodic ethnic sounds is what makes the sound so interessting and it really is innovative for Portugal to send something like this to Eurovision. When I knew Conan Osíris was going to compose a song for Festival da Canção, my first thought was that either something really good or something really bad were to come, and fortunately, it came out as something brilliant. This deserves to go through to the final, and I hope it gets a good finish to Portugal. It would be very unfair if that didn't happen, and I'm not saying this just because it is my country. For me, this is perfect for Eurovision, it's a 10/10!

Sometimes risks should be taken and Portugal’s this year entry is one example of it. Conan Osíris wrote a song full of metaphors and this song is full of hidden meanings and some of them are precisely related to the Portuguese word saudade. This song may have many interpretations but I think it’s valid to say that this depicts the feeling of missing someone and then breaking the phone tired of trying to call because he realizes the other person is not there anymore, in other words, the other person is dead or at least they don’t speak to each other anymore. I like the way Conan sings, mainly when he seems to reach some fado tones in some parts of the songs, which is interesting because even in a song very different from what Portugal usually sends, the Portuguese roots are not forgotten. Besides, I like the instrumental part in the sense that it shows us a lot of very different ethnical influences that go beyond the Portuguese ones – we can listen to some African and Arabic influences. In a nutshell, on one hand I think that this song can easily led Portugal to a very high place in the grand final, but on the other hand, I’m scared that the amount of the metaphors and rhythmic mixtures in this song can make people not to understand the message of it and consequentially not take it so seriously, leading Portugal not to qualify. I’ll give it a 8,5/10.
